I had an appointment with my regular OB office this morning and I've officially been handed off to a perinatologist.
I knew it was coming but it still strikes that moment of fear... Is something wrong?
My blood pressure was normal at 120/78 and no protein or sugar in the ole urine so that's all excellent. Both heart beats were strong but he didn't tell me what they were this time.
I saw a different doctor in the practice and it was my first time with him. He's a man of few words.
I asked if I should be concerned about an incompetent cervix and he didn't seem concerned. He said most are caused by an anatomical defect with the mother - either because of previous D&C or abortion or a cervical biopsy. He said carrying twins doesn't necessarily increase the risk.
He went right into, "Are you seeing any specialists yet?". And then proceeded to tell me he thinks I'll feel better seeing a specialist.
Feel better?!
Is there something noted in my chart?
I'm recalling an episode of Seinfeld when Elaine was classified as a "difficult patient".
Thank God I knew it was normal to be referred or else I think I would've freaked out.
So, I have my first appointment next week on the 9th and that's when I'll find out the sexes (I hope!).
I do feel better knowing that I'll be seeing a group of doctor's who specialize in high risk pregnancies. And, the even better news?
I get to have sonograms every 4 weeks so I get to see the babies more often!

I've been wondering what the policy is on that with twins. I haven't started care with my OB yet but that is one of my questions. Sounds like it's pretty standard practice.
That's one great thing about being high risk: the many ultrasounds. Being type 1 diabetic, I'll have ultrasounds ever 3-4 weeks too :)
yayyy for seeing the babies every 4 weeks. now THAT is awesome!
Yahhoo for more ultrasounds and the high risk and Peri office's have GREAT u/s machines.
I am in a group of about 12 women expecting twins in the fall. More than half of us are having cervical problems. None of us have been told it is FOR SURE incompetent cervix (I guess IC is hard to diagnose, but that is what I have been saying I have, although maybe not.. for some reason my Peri won't confirm she said there are too many factors, whatever that means), it could also be an infection or pre-term labor that causes the cervix to shorten. Many of the women did not have problems with their singetons and are having problems with twins. Please please just have them keep a close eye on it.
If it makes you feel any better, we've been seeing a specialist since about week 9 or so. It makes me feel tons better to see all the pictures and heartbeat and growth scan information they provide. I think you'll love it. Plus, I feel like I am being monitored more closely as far as pre-term labor as well. Keep us posted!
I was thinking the same thing...maybe it's because you're pg with twins. Glad to hear that you're doing okay!
