I...I....I....I want to read a book

I don't think this is anything to really worry about but I wanted to see if anyone is or has experienced this.

Over the last 2-3 days, Kendall has developed a stutter.  It seems to be mostly confined to the first word of the sentence she is trying to say but it's new so I'm not sure if I should be worried or not?

She has (at least to me) a pretty advanced vocabulary and she easily speaks in 5-6 word sentences now.   It doesn't seem to happening at any specific time like when she's overly tired or excited.  I've noticed it at different times of the day.

I know it's normal for their minds to work quicker than their mouths so I'm tempted to chalk it up to that?   For example, tonight she was trying to tell me she wanted to read a specific book and she repeated "I" at least 5 times before she finished the sentence with "want to read a book".   She did the same thing when I picked them up from school and was trying to tell me that she saw something out the window.

Any advice?

I absolutely think their minds work faster than their mouths. I wouldn't worry. My kids did this too. I to tell them to just stop and slow down. Try not to laugh, because it can be awful cute, but she will just get more frustrated.

My 2 1/2 year old does the same. He really has so, so much to say that he just gets tongue-tied and it almost sounds like a stutter. But like your little one, this is a new development and my feeling is that if there are no other concerns and it hasn't been around for very long, then chalk it up to normal stuff and don't fret. Easier said than done when you're a parent, right?

Hi, I read your blog frequently and enjoy reading about the twins. I have 22 month old boy/girl twins. I am a speech-language pathologist. It just sounds like developmental stuttering which is quite typical at this age. Here is a great link to put your mind at ease. http://speechtherapyweb.com/preschool-age-dysfluency-normal-or-not/

All the best to you, Kathy
