I Got In Trouble

I saw my endocrinologist today to check my thyroid levels. During pregnancy, it's not uncommon to have the levels get all crazy. I've been going every 6 weeks because I'm at an increased risk for miscarriage if my levels get too high or too low.

Anyway, they always weigh me and apparently, I haven't gained ANY weight. Zippy. Zilch. She was NOT happy.

I had to review my entire diet with her and to put it bluntly, she said, "You have to eat more. You aren't eating enough".

Translation - "You are starving your babies".

So, here's my typical diet:
Breakfast (one of the following)
A bowl of cereal (usually multi-grain such as Raisin Bran or Total). Sometimes with fruit and usually with a glass of calcium-enriched orange juice
A bagel with cream cheese with OJ
An English muffin with a slice of tomato and American cheese OR peanut butter with OJ

Mid-morning snack (one of the following)
Granola bar
Trail mix (about a cup)
Crackers (Cheez-Its or Rice cakes)

Lunch
Leftover dinner or
Lean Cuisine frozen dinner with chips or salad

Afternoon snack (one of the following)
Pudding
Granola bar
Peanut butter crackers

Dinner
I pretty much eat whatever seems appealing. I'll usually eat some sort of pasta at least 2 times/week, chicken has been grossing me out so I haven't been eating as much of that. We eat out twice/week at someplace like Baja, Chipotle.

I've never been a huge junk food eater and I try to eat healthy. Obviously, I'm trying twice as hard now that I'm pregnant. I eat until I feel full.

So, where in the hell am I supposed to get another 600 calories per day? I don't think I can fit it my stomach! I fully expect to gain at least 40 lbs while pregnant so I'm not trying to NOT gain weight.

She suggested that I start drinking more milk and/or milkshakes and I can do that (the milkshakes will be easier because I've always hated milk).

If anyone has any suggestions, I will gladly take them. My OB/GYN didn't mention any concerns about my weight at my appointment on Tuesday but she also didn't have a baseline to compare.

Do you like milk at all? What about a glass or two of milk during the day? Maybe make a smoothie at night with yogurt and fruit?

I do it with WHOLE milk. I too am NOT fond on milk so I mix it with chocolate whey protein power or Ovaltine. As soon as I did that, they weight came on. Oh and ice cream too. Grab Dr. Luke's book. When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads. They will outline what you should eat and what you should gain. It is a GREAT book! Acutally, I will be done with it in a week or less. I could pass it onto you if you email me your address. ;-)

If I remember right, you're still in your first trimester, right? Granted I only had one, I only lost weight my first trimester and it finally started coming back on partway into the 2nd, and they weren't too concerned (I'm about average for my height). I think everyone gains differently, because by the end of my pregnancy I was at +30!

Plus, I don't know about multiples, but for a singleton you're only supposed to gain a pound or two during the first trimester because the baby(ies) hardly weigh anything at this point.

I just can't believe she's telling you to eat milkshakes ;). But, I don't really have any ideas, sorry!! I don't think I ever ate the recommended # of calories, its impossible to get that much into your tummy!

Sorry for the long reply.

Man I wish I had your problem!! I feel like I'm eating pretty healthy myself, at least, I'm not using the "i'm pregnant" excuse so I'm eating the same as before, and I'm still gaining so much weight. I still have 3 months to go with only one and don't know how high that scale is going to go!!

I think peanut butter is good for calories? Maybe pair it with celery to get some veggies in there?

But I agree with Anna Kauz's comment, that I thought it was normal to gain minimally through the first trimester...

Happy eating!!

Oh to have this problem. I would look at healthy high calories - avacado, whole milk, indian food has a ton of calories if you can eat it. A large slice of chocolate cake with chocolate icecream and a choco milk shake. that should do it ;-)

Nesquick Milk Shakes are about 400 calories for not a lot of volume. The chocolate is pretty good. I have bad IBS and lose weight when I get stressed. Those things get me through. You'll find them in the dairy aisle. Also, get yourself a 24 pack of string cheese and go to town. Good for baby and easy to eat.

I don't think it's about more food, but rather foods with more calories that will get the babies happier. Don't choose lean cuisine for lunch, rather choose a tuna sandwich and a creamy soup. Switch to whole foods rather than reduced fat or sugar free.

If you like avocado...add some into your diet. It's high in "good" fat, so should help you gain some weight when needed.
